Effects of early whole-body vibration treatment on knee neuromuscular function and postural control after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A randomized controlled trial

Department of Movement, Human and Health Sciences, University of Rome Foro Italico, Rome, Italy

34 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients underwent either 4 weeks of WBV-OF (WBV at optimal frequency) training in addition to a traditional rehabilitation program (TRP), or a traditional rehabilitation program only, starting from the first month after surgery

Results

Results

Patients were assessed for maximal voluntary isometric strength during both knee extension and flexion

  • Strength symmetry of knee flexor muscles improved in WBV-OF+TRP patients more than in TRP patients at 1 month after treatment (mean 66% (+ 15 standard deviation (SD)) vs 5 8% + 13 SD)

  • Likewise at the 3-month follow-up (mean 77% (+ 15) vs 64% (+ 15))

  • Adding 4-weeks of WBV-OF to a traditional rehabilitation program 1 month after surgery was effective in improving muscle strength of the knee flexor muscles
